Laikipia, Kenya: The Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) Laikipia branch descended into chaos during its Annual General Meeting (AGM) on 25th November 2024. National Treasurer Wicks Mwethi Njenga was ejected from the meeting, marking the latest episode in a series of internal wrangles within the union.
The meeting, held at Thingitu Boys Secondary School, was disrupted by heated exchanges and accusations. Attendees accused Mr. Njenga of interfering in the branch’s leadership affairs and supporting a rival faction.
Mr. Njenga, however, defended his actions, citing his role in auditing the branch’s Burial and Benevolent Fund (BBF). He expressed concerns about alleged misappropriation of funds and suspended the accounts of key branch officials.
The branch leadership, led by Secretary Robert Miano, rejected these accusations, calling them unfounded and politically motivated.
The Laikipia branch’s turmoil mirrors the broader divisions within KUPPET. Recent meetings with President William Ruto have exposed deep-seated disagreements among national officials, with some members excluded from crucial discussions.
The union’s internal struggles raise questions about its ability to effectively represent the interests of teachers and address pressing issues in the education sector. As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how KUPPET will navigate these challenges and restore unity within its ranks.
